About IDFAcademy

IDFAcademy
During the festival, IDFAcademy offers an annual three-day training program for emerging filmmakers, producers, and film students. The program gives them the opportunity to meet highly esteemed documentary professionals who are willing to share their knowledge of the industry.

This year’s IDFAcademy is presenting a broad variety of inspirational tutors and masters of the genre, from filmmakers to distributors. The curriculum contains master classes, case studies, lectures, panels, small-scale workshops, and roundtable sessions with international professionals. The IDFAcademy Program 2011 takes place in the Compagnietheater from November 18-20.

IDFAcademy's Summerschool
From July 4-9, 2011, cultural center De Brakke Grond in the heart of Amsterdam was host to the 4th annual IDFAcademy Summer School. Twenty-seven enthusiastic, ambitious young filmmakers gathered in this cultural hub to exchange ideas, work on their projects, make new contacts, and learn more about their craft. Together with eight tutors, these talented filmmakers worked on developing and fine-tuning their film plans. The participants were divided into a script group and an editing group. The program included a mix of individual sessions involving filmmakers and their tutors, as well as group seminars in which participants could offer advice and critique one another’s work. The program also hosted a series of lectures with Janus Metz talking about structuring the story and Marjoleine Boonstra on the visual aspects of storytelling.

Three films in this year’s IDFA program were developed in the Summer Schools of 2008-2010: Citadel (Diego Mondaca, Bolivia/Germany), King Naki and the Thundering Hooves (Tim Wege, South Africa), and 5 Broken Cameras (Emad Burnat & Guy Davidi, Israel/Palestine/France).
