Het Documentaire Paviljoen

Het Documentaire Paviljoen

In March 2024, Het Documentaire Paviljoen officially opened its doors as a vibrant gathering space for documentary filmmakers, audiences, industry professionals, and students. Through an ongoing dialogue with the documentary community and the public, the program seeks to shape Het Documentaire Paviljoen into a true home for documentary art in the years to come.

Opening – March 2024

For its opening week in March 2024, Het Documentaire Paviljoen invited six diverse creators to reflect on today’s complex world through documentary—a world shaped by conflict, change, uncertainty, and polarization. With trust in democracy, government, and other institutions eroding, critical questions are being raised about the role of cultural spaces in this shifting landscape. The result was a dynamic, kaleidoscopic program featuring a range of film selections—from classics to niche titles—alongside a VR exhibition, conversations, performances, and more.

Building programming and visibility

With its programming, Het Documentaire Paviljoen is working to establish a permanent home for documentary in the city. To build recognition and consistency, since April 2024, audiences have been able to attend film screenings, talks, and events every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. This regular schedule is complemented by special initiatives, such as a ten-day VR Gallery or multi-day collaborations with the Netherlands Film Academy.

Collaboration is at the heart of the pavilion's vision. Filmmakers, producers, and creative organizations from the Dutch documentary community play an active role in shaping activities that directly support makers, from testing works-in-progress to hosting monthly gatherings in an intimate setting.

Program partners with a strong presence in the cultural landscape—including Het Parool, OneWorld, De Groene Amsterdammer, Het Hem, DARKMATTER Collective, and Het Stedelijk Museum—also contribute to the initiative. Efforts to enhance the venue’s visibility include developing a distinctive visual identity, launching a dedicated Instagram account, sending regular newsletters, and conducting targeted outreach both in the city and on-site.

IDFA and Het Documentaire Paviljoen

IDFA has been based in Het Documentaire Paviljoen since the summer of 2023. During this development phase, it has been explored how to collaborate most effectively and amplify each other’s strengths. To support year-round programming, investments have been made in expanding the team, deepening expertise, and improving processes and infrastructure.

Additionally, existing IDFA programs—such as training programs IDFA Project Space and IDFA Project Space NL, alongside the annual festival in November—have created new opportunities for Het Documentaire Paviljoen. As a result, it has grown into a central hub for both the Dutch and international documentary community.
