Unapologetic
A group of activists disrupt brunch at a hip eatery in Chicago, to the mild irritation of the predominantly white clientele. They chant the names of the victims of racist police violence and demand justice for Rekia Boyd and Laquan McDonald, two young Black people who were killed by the Chicago police force.
Unapologetic follows Janaé Bonsu and “Bella” BAHHS, two young leaders of the movement fighting for social equality. They share the same goals, but have different methods. Bella is a hip-hop artist whose outlet is art, and her rap and poetry are powerful channels for protest at demonstrations. She was born while her parents were in jail and is now corresponding with her brother, who is in custody. Meanwhile Janaé alternates between protesting and refining her research proposal, which connects her academic work with her activist struggle.
And the two activist leaders have yet another battle to fight in this film spotlighting the role of women as the driving force behind social revolutions: propagating a feminist perspective within the often patriarchal Black Lives Matter movement.
