Subtitled in English, French spoken, Introduction in English
Before she became a filmmaker, Agnès Varda was a photographer. On 9 May 1954, she took a photo on the beach near Calais. In the foreground, a dead goat lies on the pebbles; at the shoreline, a naked man stands gazing out to sea; next to him sits a little boy, Ulysse, who is looking into the camera. Almost 30 years after taking this photograph, Varda revisits the people who posed for it and explores their memories of that day.
Through interviews, her photographic archive and her voice-over, Varda surveys the twilight zone between memory, fact and fiction. What kind of day was it? To what extent does a picture make a reliable anchor for our memory? A contemplative and moving search for the origins of an image and the lives encompassing it.
