Performativity and editing in Agnès Varda's cinema
Performativity and editing in Agnès Varda's cinema
Description

Understanding Agnès Varda’s unique filmmaking process opens up new ways of appreciating her work. This evening, filmmaker and editor Diana Toucedo will delve into two central elements of Varda’s practice, performativity and editing, through key works from her filmography.

Throughout her career, Agnès Varda transformed cinema into a space of inquiry and playful experimentation. Her films dissolve the boundaries between fiction and documentary, performance and re-enactment, portrait and self-portrait, shaping a language in which hybridity becomes a powerful tool for exploring a deeply personal, sensorial, and female subjectivity. Varda embraced the potential to be both subject and other, the otherness inherent in every self, otherness within us, or even the gaze of a woman that always remains several. Many of her films offer a gaze that is multiple, shifting, and unapologetically plural, at once intimate and political, transforming cinema into a mirror where identity is not reflected, but refracted.

Join Diana Toucedo in an effort to unfold the complex creative process of a filmmaker who developed cinema as a method of becoming, a way of moving through time, through the self, and through the world, while preserving what always escapes capture.
