Explore the rich tapestry of untold narratives from Black history and jazz with an immersive program presented by DARKMATTER Collective and Het Documentaire Paviljoen. The event is split into two parts, offering an evening filled with sonic adventure and cultural exploration.
The first part brought Rewind & Play to the screen, followed by a spoken word performance. The second part of the programme will explore the thematics of the film quite literally through Play. We start off with a compelling lecture by musical entrepreneur and DJ Gayance, pseudonym of Aïsha Vertus. Her sets are a journey through Black music: she collects vinyl from afro-Latin jazz, the Caribbean, West-Africa and electronic music from both sides of the Atlantic. Breaking social norms and drawing attention to social inequalities of Black and indigenous communities, especially at the intersection of gender, Gayance actively makes change through moral power in her work and music.
Following the lecture, Phantom Wizard will close the programme with a mesmerising live electronic music performance. Born Isha Forster, Phantom Wizard is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer hailing from Amsterdam. Reflections on nature, the metaphysical, ancestors and humanity get sonified into abstract experimental works that embody the ‘fribari’ philosophy.
