Past Disquiet: Before the Dying of the Light
Past Disquiet: Before the Dying of the Light
Description

Past Disquiet is a research-based documentary and archival exhibition that has unearthed forgotten or unwritten histories of solidarity in the arts. Drawing on over a decade of research, curators Kristine Khouri and Rasha Salti now present the most recent iteration in Amsterdam at Framer Framed. Writer, researcher, and curator of art and film Rasha Salti presents two films proposed to accompany this exhibition, shed light on two aspects of the exhibition’s intention and process.

Before the Dying of the Light, by Ali Essafi (2021), is a poetic reconstitution of a peculiar chapter in the recent history of Morocco, namely when artists were mobilized to resist autocratic policies muzzling freedom of expression in the 1970s.

La Jetée, the Fifth Shot (2024), by Dominique Cabrera, is a dizzying investigation that reveals connections between Chris Marker’s vanguard cult science fiction film, La Jetée, and the history of France’s colonization of Algeria.

The two films are screened separately. Tickets for La Jetée, the Fifth Shot can be booked here

Before the Dying of the Light

This glittering collage of posters, magazine covers, archive footage, jazz music, and cartoons takes you back to the art scene of 1970s Morocco. It was a time of excitement about the future, but was extinguished by repression.
