Agnès Varda and Sara Gómez were both pioneering filmmakers who share a focus on humanism, drawing attention to marginalized voices and the impact of political transformation on individuals. During a trip to Cuba, Varda made Salut les Cubains (1963) where Gómez assistedher. The two became friends, and Varda later paid tribute to Gómez, who became one of the few women filmmakers in Cuba at the time. The experimental approach to documentary filmmaking and the blending of personal, social, and political themes in Gómez's Una isla para Miguel (1969) reflect the influence of Varda on her work.
As part of I’m Curious. Period. this evening takes Varda’s Salut les Cubains (1963) as a starting point to explore the relationship between Agnès Varda and Sara Gómez through excerpts, interviews and of course their short films.
