IFFR in Amsterdam: Wang Bing Youth Trilogy
IFFR in Amsterdam: Wang Bing Youth Trilogy
Description

As an uncompromising voice of contemporary Chinese filmmaking, Wang Bing's work fearlessly chronicles the socio-economic changes and challenging working conditions in China.

In conjunction with IFFR 2025 and the release of Wang Bing's third and final installment of his Youth series, Het Documentaire Paviljoen will screen the Youth trilogy, offering a unique opportunity to experience this epic work at the unhurried pace that allows the films to achieve their radical realism.

Immerse yourself in the daily lives of a group of young textile workers who leave their rural villages each year to move to the manufacturing city of Zhili, each with their own story of the struggles, transient highs, and emotional beauty of youth.

Wang Bing was IDFA's Guest of Honor in 2023, where Youth (Spring) was shown as part of his retrospective.

Youth (Spring)

Youth (Spring)

In this monumental documentary, Wang Bing observes the daily lives of young Chinese textile workers, who celebrate their youth and try to build a future between rattling sewing machines and messy dormitories.
Youth (Hard Times)

Youth (Hard Times)

Part two of Wang’s sublime Youth trilogy focuses on the exceptional economic system operating in the Chinese textile city of Zhili, where 300,000 young clothes makers work all hours in largely unregulated workshops for an insecure income.
Youth (Homecoming)

Youth (Homecoming)

After portraying the workshops (Spring) and the garment city of Zhili (Hard Times), this closing part of the monumental Youth trilogy pulls back even further to capture the textile workers’ annual journey to their families living hundreds of kilometers away.
