As early as 1993 euthanasia was legalised by the Dutch government, albeit under strict conditions. At the end of that year Cees de Joode learned that he was suffering from an incurable disease. Knowing that he would die from his disease in the near future, he opted for euthanasia. He passes his final months together with his wife and supported by his family doctor. Maarten Nederhorst captured this period on film in a documentary which is just as poignant as it is controversial. Nederhorst follows the process of dying, from the frequent visits by the family doctor to the administration of the fatal injection. He registers how Cees, his wife and the doctor deal with the approaching end and with the procedure.
