Columbia Urbica
The free market and competition principles do not only govern the upper strata of society, but also determine marginal lives. In this respect, the life of drifters and other outcasts does not differ from that of the bourgeoisie. Columba urbica is a tragicomic illustration of that fact. The film, having as its subtitle 'short Darwinian film in Belgrade 1994', shows the survival strategy of the gypsy Jasar Dzemalov, who lives in an illegal, humble dwelling he has built against a medieval castle in Belgrade. For a long time he provided for himself by taking food from trash cans, but due to increased competition ? the war inflation in Belgrade has reduced many aged people to beggary ? he was forced to find his food in another way. An inventive solution sprang to his mind when he saw the city's pigeons. Now he usually eats them with relish: "I mainly eat like a prince."
