The Wall
Less than fifteen years after the collapse of the Berlin Wall, Israel is constructing a wall between its territory and the Palestinian regions. Last July, the International Court of Justice in The Hague judged that the route of the partition, partly running over Occupied Palestinian Territory, is in breach of international law. WALL shows the implications this has for a society controlled by fear and the consequences for daily life on both sides of the fence. Director Simone Bitton interviewed not only the head of the Israeli Ministry of Defence about the technical details, but she also visited the concrete factory that produces the wall sections, spoke with the Palestinian workers who put up the wall and interviewed people living on both sides of the 500-kilometre-long partition, every kilometre of which costs $2 million. Before even a single face appears on the screen, we hear the voices of passers-by on the soundtrack, as if the wall has already made them invisible.
