For twenty-five years, Antonio Mendez was a master deceiver for the CIA. Helped by Hollywood, he set up a subdivision where any imaginable identity could be created. They applied the motto ‘the really good spies don’t need disguises, they’re just uninteresting’ - the little gray men from the title, the invisible soldiers of the Cold War. Mendez played so many roles that his own identity became one of them. ‘You have to remind yourself that this is what you ought to do if you were you.’
