Festival history

In 1989, the legendary 'Holland-Amerika Lijn' was sold to Carnival Cruise Lines. With this deal, this American company obtained the knowledge of luxury sea-cruises accumulated in the Netherlands. The old name was changed into Holland America Line and for an amount of 250 million dollars a brand-new, thirteen-deck ship was built and given the historical name 'Statendam'. The ship numbers 604 crew members, who take care of a maximum of 1266 passengers. The captain and his crew have the Dutch nationality. Filmmaker Sander Snoep signed up for a cruise from Rome to Las Palmas. SEABORNE OPERA is the result of that trip: a safe and luxurious retreat from reality in a drifting world.
