Love beyond Boundaries - Made in Japan
When filmmaker Puck de Leeuw visits her sister who is married to an American clergyman, she wonders if she would be able to adapt herself to a foreign lover's culture. In order to find an answer to this question, she follows the experiences of three non-Japanese women who are married to Japanese men. For many westerners the Japanese culture is very remote, giving rise to the question to what extent these women have had to adjust themselves to maintain their position. 'Alien registration' it says on their identity card. The women not only feel that way, after all these years they still behave accordingly. However gracefully they pour the tea, it is never elegantly enough. They repeatedly wonder about the use of adapting themselves to their husband's way of life. They are still not accepted even by his family.
