Live from Palestine
Director Rashid Masharawi was born in the Gaza Strip and grew up in a refugee camp. Not surprisingly, the films he has made since 1986 deal with Palestine. Like this portrait of the radio station Voice of Palestine. In the direct style of a news account, he reports on the difficult circumstances in which the broadcaster has to operate from day to day. A staff member emphasises that Voice of Palestine, the official mouthpiece of the regime, is the only station in the world that can convince the world of the Palestinian standpoint. The reporters hit the streets and interview people in a hospital. Meanwhile, in the studio, the strange quiet of an office prevails. While reports of bombardments come in, staff members discuss the question of whether the choice of subject might lead to Israeli retaliatory measures. When there is a sudden power failure during a live broadcast, people react nervously.
