Sukiyaki - A Conversation Piece

A family is having a sukiyaki party. The camera is focused on their hand movements while we hear their intimate conversations. They gossip about characters who appear on a television screen. Director Mayumi Nakazaki: "My intention was to play with the verbal and visual codes we use in our understanding and eventually to deconstruct the image of "other people." I'm interested in subjects such as disguise, uniformity and identity, together with gender, sociological and ethnological issues. My recent works are a result of my investigation about people's behavior and recollection of conversations. I am interested in creating fiction while using scenes from reality, and at the same time I try to elevate reality to the rank of narrative."
