New York - Images of the Edge
In new york, images from the edge the 'homelessness' theme is shown from a rather unusual perspective. The people portrayed in the film may be penniless but they are not going down because of the wretched conditions they have to live in. Every one of them manages to engage in art as a complement to the daily struggle for life. An example is Chris, who is able to keep going by singing his own songs, the lyrics of which usually refer to his personal situation. Another one makes animal figurines from iron wire and Carla, once diagnosed as being schizophrenic, makes sculptures. The filmmaker follows five of them at their daily routines and films them during an exhibition of 'outsider art', as their work is now classified by the established art scene. It becomes clear that art is their 'soulkeeper', the only way to keep up their self-respect.
