Culloden
The last war waged on British territory involved the Battle of Culloden, at which the Highlanders fought the English and the Lowland Scots, some 250 years ago. In the BBC classic CULLODEN, this bloody clash is reconstructed in an intensely realistic way, thanks to amateur actors who are real descendants of the soldiers who gave their lives at the time. The story is told from the perspective of fictional witnesses. This, combined with wild camera movements during the fights, real cannonballs being fired and realistic explosions, makes the spectator feel as if he is really present at this dramatic event. One year later, Peter Watkins went on to direct THE WAR GAME, about a nuclear attack on England; a film so controversial that the BBC broadcast it only twenty-one years later.
