On Animal Locomotion
I link up EL SOL DEL MEMBRILLO with a programme in which time is circulating in another way: between the films. We open with ON ANIMAL LOCOMOTION, the title of which is derived from the work of Eadward Muybridge, a 19th century photographer and forerunner of cinema, who developed a way to analyse the motion of man and animals. ON ANIMAL LOCOMOTION is my contribution to Hexagon, a co-operative venture between six filmmakers and six composers. It is also the resumption of my cooperation with the jazz composer and bandleader Willem Breuker that started in 1966 with A FILM FOR LUCEBERT and so far comprises ten films. ON ANIMAL LOCOMOTION is constructed in a free manner and is totally oriented towards physical movement: the 'animal in motion' is the filmmaker himself. Johan van der Keuken
