Obermans aktie
Carel Oberman is the son of Piet Oberman, a famous World War II resistance hero. It is not clear whether he inherited this from his father, but the 43-year-old Carel has a strong predilection for weaponry and the army. As a result of his brothers’ national service, though, he never served in the army, much to his mother’s satisfaction and to his own deep regret. So a career as a professional soldier passed him by. Instead, he started working in the timber business, one in which his family has worked for generations. His heart is not in this work, but he considers it a family obligation he has to meet. To compensate, he makes himself useful as a volunteer in the Dutch Territorial Army, where he waits in vain for a call to action during the foot-and-mouth crisis.
