GLIMA is the first part of a trilogy in which Icelandic filmmaker Bödvar Bjarki Pétursson examines the cultural heritage of his country. Glima is an Icelandic type of wrestling, which dates back to the time of the Vikings. Originally it was a refined combat sport, but through the centuries it has developed into something that looks more like a dance than a fight. Bödvar Bjarki Pétursson chose to cast his film in the mould of a docudrama. Starting point is a Glima-tournament in the thirties. From there we travel back and forth in time, from a misty past where a young shepherd wrestles with a ghost to the present time where young children are still participating in this sport.
