Festival history

In the fifteen years of its existence the Amsterdam artists‘ initiative W139 (Warmoesstraat 139) has grown into a meeting place for young and experimental artists. The history of this alternative gallery and theatrical exhibition centre (the building used to house Prince Henry‘s private brothel) has been represented in different ways by fifteen young filmmakers. In the form of a mini-documentary, video clip or cinematographic poem they portrayed the artists who have been important to the history of W139. Compiler Walter Grootenboer was responsible for the documentary frame story, incorporating interviews with people like Peter Giele, Peter Klashorst and Rob Scholte. Grootenboer (Amsterdam, 1959) graduated from the audiovisual department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam in 1984. He is active as a filmmaker and film teacher.
