Het witte kasteel
THE WHITE CASTLE, the second part of the Triptych North-South, made in collaboration with the writer Bert Schierbeek, is a merry-go-round of images. All the images from one series enter into all possible relationships with all the images from other series. So, the images constantly return in different correlations - with slightly different camera movements, slightly differently framed or timed, in various states of clarification or pollution. This merry-go-round technique can also be found in THE READING LESSON and in BERT SCHIERBEEK/THE DOOR. In one of the films I have not included in my programme due to lack of space, THE MASTER AND THE GIANT, it is one of the fundamental forms, and in ICONOCLASM/A STORM OF IMAGES cutter Jan Dop and I have exerted the 'prayer-reel of images' to its utmost. THE WHITE CASTLE is organized around three sites: an island in Spain that became the prey of the tourist industry, a community centre in the 'ghetto' in Columbus, Ohio, USA, and two factories in the Netherlands, one of which was taken over by the workers.
