Anouschka
How can you know where you’re going if you don’t know where you came from? In this animated mixed reality game, it makes no difference where you actually are, because your smartphone screen takes you into the Amsterdam district of Bijlmermeer—experienced through Anouschka, a Black teenager. Following a racist incident at school, she delves into her family history, which turns out to be closely bound up with this local area, one of the most diverse in the Netherlands.
You help Anouschka by playing all sorts of mini-games along her way, ranging from collecting the ingredients for dishes cooked by her grandmother Afiba, to a memory challenge based on batik patterns. In between the games, animations and archive footage provide more context, with a sharp focus on the ways immigrants have been championing the preservation of their respective cultures for generations. Anouschka plays the violin, but to find her own song she first needs to rediscover the music of her ancestors.
