In the thirties, 'hobos' travelled illegally through the United States on boxcars to escape the great Depression. But they are still here. Voluntary wanderers who lead lives of hardship. HOBO follows one of them, Beargrease, on a trip of about 2,000 miles on the Burlington Northern High Line from Minneapolis, Minnesota through North Dakota, Montana, Idaho and the Rocky Mountains to Seattle, Washington. Beargrease has travelled all his life. First as a sailor, later on in Vietnam and the Far East, and now in America, via the railroad tracks that traverse the country length- and breadthways. Hobos lead a life outside the law, but their world has its own values and codes. A world in which survival is perceptible every minute.
