A Diary for Timothy

Original and effective reconstruction of the last six months of World War II, in the form of the diary of the newly born Timothy. While he is being weighed, we see images of miners combing their hair. While he is bathed, the Battle of Arnhem is waged. While Timothy is sleeping, Myra Hess is giving a piano concert in the National Gallery. Children are ice skating, people are celebrating New Year, a Russian offensive starts in Poland, someone gets an arm massage, bombs are being dropped, schoolchildren are singing. The documentary juxtaposes large and small events, establishing links that otherwise would have gone unnoticed. Once the liberation of Europe is complete and the documentary is almost finished, the now six-month-old Timothy wonders whether he and his contemporaries will do better in the future.
