On the face of it, SANS SOLEIL seems to be a travel report by (fictional) cameraman Sandor Krasna. By means of letters, read by Florence Delay, he presents his viewpoints on two "pôles extrèmes de la survie": wealthy Japan on the one hand and Guinea-Bissau and the Cape Verde Islands on the other. According to the comment, the latter are: "the poorest and most forgotten areas of the African continent, where the people are working themselves up from nothing at all to extreme poverty". The film surely is not a conventional documentary. Although it provides much information about the depicted countries, it is foremost Marker's poetical and philosophical view of the world, often evoked by means of strong parallel editing.
