On a small island off the west coast of France a couple leads a degradingly harsh life, together with their servants. During all seasons they have to survive by collecting sea-weed along the shoreline and selling it to the few captains mooring on the island. They live like prisoners on the island, their earnings depend on fate.
By choosing for a social-realistic style in filming the protagonists, and because of the dramatic comment which gives a stirring emphasis to their situation, Yannick Bellon, 24 at the time, produced a sharp portrayal of an uncommon profession in an environment which is not very ordinary, either.
