Q'eshwachaca - El puente dorado
Many of the old Inca traditions live on in the high mountains of Peru. One example is the construction of a footbridge made of rope: the immortal ‘qeshwachaca bridge’. The bridge is replaced once every so many years; a ritual occasion when everybody makes an all-out effort. To the Peruvians, the bridge is more than just a way to span two protruding rock faces. The daily users of the bridge see the qeshwachaca as an old friend, so when they take apart the old bridge, they shed sorrowful tears. The filmmakers are members of the first independent Peruvian film production company. They consider it their task to show their country from another angle. The foreign media only focus on the poverty and drugs, but Peru has an age-old, rich culture and in many places its nature is still untouched and beautiful.
