In Search of Kundun (with Martin Scorsese)
In one of the opening scenes of IN SEARCH OF KUNDUN, Martin Scorsese says to the interviewer: ‘I‘m always interested in people who really have the guts to stand up and do things through non-violence. ‘Cause I‘m so much aware of the other way of doing it, through violence, and it‘s so muchsanctified in our world.‘ Clearer than this, the motivation of the director of extremely violent movies like MEAN STREETS and TAXI DRIVER to make a film about the peace-loving Dalai Lama cannot be phrased. The recordings for this documentary were largely made when Scorsese was in Morocco, working on his film KUNDUN, telling the story of the Dalai Lama‘s life. We see the filmmaker at work on the set, while he is visibly taking pains to direct young children for the first time in his career. By the way, Scorsese only worked with Tibetan amateurs. He also met the Dalai Lama himself, in his place of exile in India.
