Festival history

Since the late sixties, Israel has been home to a community of Afro-American Israelites. These former Americans fled their native country, and more particularly the poor social conditions they grew up in. They believe they have the same ancestors as the Jews and they speak Hebrew. Their community is strictly religious and has a patriarchal social structure, in which men are allowed to marry several women. SISTER - WIFE tells the story of two women who are married to the same man. Zipora has been married to Hazriel for 21 years and they have nine children. Seemingly stoically, she accepts her husband’s new marriage to the younger Er’ela. Polygamie is a spiritual truth, the priest says, but Zipora’s mother has a different opinion: ‘If your father pulled that one on me, I would burn him and his new wife alive,’ we hear her say to her daughter over the phone.
