Kids Rights: Alexandra

War is waged by adults, but children often pay the price. This is why Article 38 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child states that extra protection should be given to children in war situations. This includes after a war, protecting them against buried landmines. Seeing Alexandra playing around her house in a village close to the border between Croatia and Bosnia, you wouldn't imagine that such drama took place right here, in this very neighborhood. The green countryside makes it all look so innocent, as does the sound of sparrows in the yard. While Alexandra looks penetratingly at us, straight into the camera, she talks in voice-over about how she likes to be around animals, loves ball games and likes to explore the area. She always used to do this with her little brother Simon, often bringing the cows in from the fields. But she hasn't gone out for a walk for a long time now. Her brother was killed after they found a strange object in a field. It exploded: "At that moment, the world turned black. The animals saw it too. At least the cows did." This is why she prefers to talk to the animals about what happened to her and her brother. "They know all my secrets."
