Festival history

Film opens with a brief impression of farming before the war, against a soundtrack background of folk song - a sequence implying the devastation caused by the Nazi invasion follows: "Like their distant Teutonic ancestors, the Fascists are warring for pillage, debauchery and the enslavement of other nations." Patriotic posters and slogans provide link to theme that the gatherers of the harvest fight "side by side with the Red Army": all equipment (ox, horse, tractor and man powered) is used, and "all are at work in the Wheat Fields" - women, soldiers on leave, even children. A large crop is harvested, stacked, threshed and taken triumphantly to State depositories. "Bread is plentiful throughout the country, and soon there will be a great deal more."
