Richard Cardinal: Cry from a Child of a Metis Child
Alanis Obomsawin
Canada
1986
is dedicated to the memory of a sensitive young Indian who committed suicide at the age of seventeen. His parents could not deal with him and he was subsequently placed in care. This film is based on the diaries he kept, which show not only his loneliness and suffering, but also his courage in a world he found brutal, indifferent and negligent. His death did not go unnoticed thanks to his diaries and foster parents, who mounted a judicial inquiry into welfare work in general and the right to remove children from the parental home in particular. This research has contributed to the improvement of child welfare.
