Rumour has it that Joris Ivens fell in love with Marceline Loridan after having seen her in Une chronique d'‚t‚. Loridan is one of the five main characters in this film by Jean Rouch and Edgar Morin who are searching for the meaning of happiness. This 'cinematic search' led to the introduction of the cin‚ma v‚rit‚ concept. By using a new type of camera, which could synchronously register sound and image and which was easy to handle owing to its small weight, a new way of filming came into being. For the first time a filmmaker could react directly and spontaneously to a situation, without the use of a shooting script. Street interviews could now be filmed without much preparation.
