Festival history

To what does Bresse chicken owe its holy status? What makes a halibut happy? How should the king crab be killed and eaten? This gastronomic spectacle provides the answers. Master Chef Jesúse Almagro is participating in the Bocuse d'Or, a major cooking competition that's being held for an enthusiastic audience in an athletic centre in Lyon. A total of 24 international top chefs prepare two complete dishes in five-and-a-half hours, to be served in small portions and to contain the above-mentioned ingredients. Despite its world-famous cuisine, Spain has never managed to win this prestigious prize. We follow Almagro during the intensive preparations at home in Spain. He gets advice from the previous winner, the Frenchman Serge Vieira, who points out the perfect balance of presentation, form, texture, temperature, level of difficulty, purity, and last but not least, taste. A nervous camera grippingly conveys the hectic energy in the kitchen, sustained by crazy circus music. According to Almagro, the art is to charm the jury without losing one's own identity. Once in Lyon, the tension can be cut with a knife. Will Almagro succeed in worthily representing his country, or will he defeated by French arrogance? Jamie Oliver, eat your heart out!
