In his very first ‘independent film’, Dutch master filmmaker Johan Van der Keuken presents an image of Amsterdam in the sixties. This work was to become the starting point of an incredibly extensive oeuvre. ‘For quite a while, I saw it as past history, but now I realise that it is an inseparable part of my work’, Van der Keuken said about the film. A living portrait of a cityscape: a walk among people and things, and the stories behind them. Van der Keuken wanted to make a sound/image collage, rather than telling a story or showing a number of random scenes.
