Four Holes

A dryly humorous portrait of Pepe, whose project after his retirement is to build his own golf course. It’s somewhere on the outskirts  of Madrid, in a lackluster, rather noisy place.

During the making of Four Holes, the equipment and circumstances were not exactly optimal. On top of that, Pepe and director Daniela Muñoz Barroso are both hard of hearing, causing occasional misunderstandings between the two. Those moments, like the stage directions she gives and he cooperatively follows, are all part of the film.

It’s disarming how the two are absorbed in the creative process together. “You say the most interesting things off-screen,” she laughs, and indeed this happens a few times. Material that wouldn’t usually make it into the final cut has nevertheless found a place in this playful narrative form. And rightly so.
