Let's Be Together
Fourteen-year-old Hairon lives with his mother and stepfather in a leafy suburb somewhere in Denmark. Hairon loves expensive Dior eyewear, elegant brand-name clothes, and heavy makeup -- items that are not exactly up the alley of your average teenage boy. Nonetheless, his family accepts him as he is, and although Hairon is confident about his effeminate appearance, he's also nervous about visiting his father in Brazil. They talk regularly on the phone, but father and son haven't seen each other in three years. In the meantime, Hairon hasn't only gotten older, but he now looks even more effeminate. When they are reunited and his father remarks on how much he has grown, Hairon says, "Wait until you see how tall I am in my six-inch heels!" His dad has a lot of questions: does his son wear makeup to school, for example? How do the other kids react? "Honestly, it's a shock to see him like this," he admits to Hairon's mom. And although it might not be a problem in Denmark, he knows that it could cause some major trouble in Brazil. He loves Hairon and worries about him, but his son keeps as firm a grip on his looks as ever.
