Festival history
This documentary is the perfect counterpart to , the feature film made by Anton Corbijn about the crucial years of the punk band Joy Division. In this film, all of those involved - and still alive - speak about Manchester, the band and the death of frontman Ian Curtis. When four young men from Manchester were inspired by a Sex Pistols concert to form a band in 1976, their lives really started to get exciting. They were young, rebellious and looking for something beautiful. Their musical skills were far from polished, and their first, self-funded record was so bad the dance floors instantly emptied. Following the acquisition of a real manager and a record deal, however, the success of Joy Division began to take off. Thanks in no small part to their new, unique sound. Ian became epileptic, however, and started to suffer from severe mood swings. This was not helped by his early marriage and being in love with another woman. Fame began to weigh ever heavier on his shoulders. Just before their international breakthrough, the lead singer hanged himself. The members of the band, journalists and many others tell the story of the punk band, accompanied by countless anecdotes and reams of archive footage of this now world-famous music. This includes many wraithlike bootlegsof gigs, and images of the city of Manchester in all its glory and misery.
