In the morning, the Swedish fishing boat Wailett leaves its homeport. This is shown by means of spectacular helicopter shots. CLOSE TO THE SEA follows the boat's crew on its trip, putting out and hauling in the nets, until their return to the harbour. The striking camera treatment indicates great respect for the fishermen's skill. The commentary is spoken by the fishermen themselves. Philosophizing about his work, one of them says: "The sea is a friend, the sea is like life." CLOSE TO THE SEA is made in the tradition of dRIFTERS and other classic documentaries about fishery. And yet there is one difference: the fishing industry is no longer timeless. The threat that sea-pollution might end it is constantly perceptible in the film.
