Ikhet (Sound Pyramid)
According to the ancient Egyptians, the Great Pyramid of Giza was the first wonder of the world. Clad in polished, white limestone, the surface is said to have acted like a mirror, reflecting the sunlight. The pyramid could be seen from afar, shining like a jewel, and was therefore named Ikhet, meaning Glorious Light.
Multimedia artist Ali Santana refers to this awe-inspiring light in his installation. In a dark space, he creates an intense physical experience using light, sound and vibration: audio-responsive LED lights and a complex sound collage are controlled by the presence and movements of the audience.
The colors and patterns of light constantly change, while the audio design comprises a synthesis of noise, rhythms and sounds that reflect the artist’s personal feelings of resilience, fear, sadness and frustration. The audience is thus immersed in and part of a microcosm in which all the senses are stimulated.
