Een andere kijk op zwakzinnigheid
This documentary about an institution for mentally retarded people discusses the traditional attitude towards mental deficiency. The film does not in the first place regard mentally handicapped people as an isolated group of people with specific characteristics, but as 'normal' human beings as far as their emotions and need for contact are concerned. Vrijman: "Mentally retarded people need us, but we also need them. The image of the pitiful retarded person is not right, because he also has something to offer. And mutual giving and receiving is the foundation for human relationships". EEN ANDERE KIJK OP ZWAKZINNIGHEID confronts the viewer with his (pre)judgements and prompts him not only to think about mentally retarded people, but also about himself.
