The Typewriter, the Rifle and the Movie Camera
To many contemporary filmmakers Samuel Fuller is nothing less than a hero. He was one of the first writer/director/producer that came out of the traditional Hollywood system. Although his greatest films belong to the classical genres of the western or the war movie, he always managed to give them a personal and critical twist. Particularly his incessant battle against racism plays a role in many of his films. In this portrait Adam Simon, former assistant to Roger Corman, shows the filmmaker himself but also introduces Martin Scorsese and Jim Jarmusch, who express their admiration for the cigar-smoking filmmaker. Together with Quentin Tarantino interviewer, narrator and producer Tim Robbins browses Fuller's house in Los Angeles. Tarantino provides many a dusty prop with lively anecdotes and quotations, in the exalted way he is known for.
