After World War II, many people in the Indonesian archipelago are in poor health and starving. The Dutch men and women of the Red Cross move into the interior to provide medical aid where it is needed. Dutch sons and daughters help the population of the Dutch colony treat the ill and feed the hungry. The healthy torsos of the Dutch relief workers contrast sharply with the underfed and sick bodies of the Indonesian inhabitants of Java. But they carry out their works of mercy with a smile on their face.
