Mauvaise conduite
BAD BEHAVIOUR deals with sexual repression within Cuban society, particularly with its homo-phobic aspects. According to the filmmakers, post-revolution Cuba considered sexuality, and especially homosexuality a product of a decadent society. From the early stages of the revolution people have tried to equate homosexuality with corruption, drugs, and prostitution. In 1965, after Cuba started maintaining ties with the Soviet Union, labour camps were established. These Unidades Militares de Ayuda a la Producción (UMAP) were intended as centres for re-educating homosexuals, persons with 'extravagant behaviour', and in addition everyone who displayed 'bad behaviour'. Various people give their opinions in this film. Among them: Susan Sontag, Herberto Padilla, Reinaldo Arenas, Guillermo Cabrera Infante, Juan Goytisolo, and Fidel Castro.
