In Ecuador’s capital Quito, football fever is everywhere in the run-up to the 2002 Football World Cup. So, also in the home of eight-year-old Julián, where his parents watch football and talk about it. At school, too, where everyone looks forward to the break so they can kick a ball around—and again after school. Playfully, without a care in the world, every free moment seems to revolve around football.

Despelote follows the perspective of a young football fanatic. Using a game controller, through the eyes of Julián, the player kicks whatever balls come his way. Constantly turning, dribbling and shooting, the world of the game gradually grows larger. In the back of a moving car, for example, or holding Julián’s mother’s hand, you are led into new situations. In other scenes, you set out on your own exploration.

The open world design regularly allows for different game choices. Small social interactions, snippets of conversation and a cheerful soundtrack create a carefree atmosphere of freedom and endless summer afternoons, filled with adventures of all shapes and sizes.
