Anima
The horses of the Arlington National Cemetery, the military cemetery near Washington, D.C., escort eight funeral processions every day, bringing fallen soldiers to their final resting place. Charlotte Dumas followed the animals for several months, capturing them in the moments just before, during and after they were resting. Horses often sleep standing up, occasionally lying down, but they always remain alert. The video shows how vulnerable these strong animals are during these moments of sleep and wakefulness. The muscular animals relax, lay themselves down and slowly shut their eyes. The title of this first video work by photographer Dumas, , is the Latin word for the soul, the immaterial, spiritual aspect of man and animal. The video is closely related to Dumas's photo series of the same name.
