is a documentary of two hours about the fate of the European intellectual, political refugees who escaped the totalitarian regime in their native countries, and emigrated to America before World War II broke out. The personal accounts of these writers, artists, musicians, and students, and their influence on American life and culture are shown by means of archive material and interviews with eyewitnesses.
also shows the attempts by American rescue teams and philanthropical organizations to help the refugees. Afterwards, this appeared to have been the greatest and most important rescue operation of intellectuals and artists in modern history.
